“Thailand towards the Automotive Hub of Production and R&D of ASEAN”

Thailand automotive industry is one of major Thai industry goals, which is the key for economy, employment, value added and automotive technology developments; including, other supported industries and related businesses in supply chains of industry, enormously from Upstream industries such as research & development, prototype design & production, tools & machinery and logistics; Midstream industries; for example, auto parts and core system production, for assembling plant and automotive assembly; Downstream industries; for instance, trading, retail and export. Currently, the situation under changing dimensions: economy, society, environment and politics in both international and regional levels as well as becoming AEC in 2015; the integration for larger production base and market, free trade and major services, flow of investment and free flow of skilled labor, are influenced to management direction of trading, investment and automotive industry policies.

“Becoming a World-Class Automotive Supplier”

Thailand’s automotive sector contributes about 12% of the GDP of the national economy with about 45% local demand and 55% export. It’s parts sector represents a significant export in its own right with raising domestic demand and higher growth potential of overseas sales. This has prompted manufacturers to invest in capacity as the automotive market relies heavily on relationships with multi-tiered supplier networks to meet their ever-changing demand. Without efficient manufacturing and supplier collaboration, automotive manufacturers face critical challenges which can heavily impact both top- and bottom-line performance. A second challenge for the Thai auto industry is to step up to higher value add components which in turn require more advanced manufacturing technologies and know-how transfer.

“Technical Session: Alternative Transport Fuels & Biofuels”

Thailand, as many other countries in the world, has faced the challenges on energy security especially the fear of oil shortage to drive economic growth. In order to fight against this, the Thai Government has launched the long-term specific plan to serve as energy security needs and sustainable development, namely, the 10 Year Alternative Energy Development Plan (AEDP 2012-2021) with the aim to increase renewable energy consumption by 25% of its total consumption by 2021. Major renewable energy shares included in the plan is from bio-energy. The goals set for daily usage of ethanol and biodiesel by 2021 are 9 million liter of ethanol, 7.2 million liter of FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) biodiesel and 3 million liter of advance biofuel. To meet with the target, the Thai government has continuously made serious efforts on public policy to support sustainable growth in the whole value chain of biofuel. Such efforts include but not limit to improving efficiency of feedstock plantation and biofuel production, tax incentives for vehicles and fuel prices.

It is estimated that in 2013, Thailand used about 2.6 million liter of ethanol and 2.88 million liter of FAME biodiesel per day. As for advance biofuel, the Energy Ministry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Technology is focusing on making advance biofuel more prices competitive and sustainable in the future.

“Technical Session: Advanced Safety Technology and Transport System”

Thailand is one of the countries with the most road traffic deaths. The highest number of accidents happens with motorcycles followed by cars and pick-ups. The number of accidents can be reduced by avoiding speeding and drunk driving. And in case of accidents injuries for drivers and passengers can be reduced by wearing helmets or safety belts, but there are much more systems available to avoid accidents or to reduce the injuries in case of an accident. Some technologies are already known from luxury passenger cars.

What about trucks? Although the number of accidents with trucks is much smaller, the consequences of accidents with trucks can be big due to the weight and the dimensions of the vehicles or the load they are carrying. Some of the major accident causes for trucks are speeding, driving too close to leading vehicle or falling asleep at the wheel. Many companies are instructing their drivers, but there are also technologies that can prevent these accidents. New technologies enable trucks to warn the drivers for obstacles, to support them to keep the lane or even to break the truck automatically. We’ll show you which systems are available and how these systems are working.

Technical Session: Future Fuel-Efficient Vehicles
Technical Session: Advanced Automotive Production and Materials Engineering

It is a well-known fact that the majority of fuel energy consumption in Thailand comes from the transportation. This is due to a rapid increase in the amount of passenger car and pickup truck during the last decade. In order to be able to sustain and control the energy consumption to compliance with the 20 years energy plan, the Ministry of Energy has come up with two strategic plans which are encourage and promote the sustainable energy consumption and rule and regulation for the vehicles that will be standardized according to the industries and Thai government. In order to achieve this goal, the ‚fuel economy standard‛ research must be conducted by using global standard testing methodology based on carbon balance approach, EURO IV Emission Testing (compliance with the Thai Industry Standard (TIS). Once all of the data have been gathered from the testing results, a regression analysis is applied in order to get the minimum energy performance standard (MEPS) and the High Energy Performance Standard (HEPS). MEPS is a part of national regulation which will be enforced by Thai’s motor vehicle legislation. HEPS is used for encouraging Thai car manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency while reduces the amount of emission that produces to the atmosphere. This will result in sustainable and maintainable energy consumption as according to the Ministry of Energy plan.
